Why does pool wiring need an electrician?

The Electrical Safety Foundation International says that to avoid electric shock drowning, you should have an electrician inspect and upgrade your pool, spa or hot tub in accordance with local codes and the National Electrical Code. It also says all electrical equipment used for swimming pools, even cleaning equipment, should be grounded.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission lists the electricity sources around a pool, including underwater lights, pumps, filters, extension cords, outlets and overhead power lines, and notes that wet surfaces increase the chance of electrocution.

What jobs do the contractors handle?

Typical work includes circuits for pumps and heaters, hot tub and spa hookups, lighting, GFCI protection, grounding and bonding, and safety checks on existing equipment. The contractor also checks where outlets and cords sit relative to the water.

What is the safety rule of thumb for cords and outlets?

ESFI says electrical devices and cords should be kept at least 10 feet away from water sources such as pools and spas, and recommends GFCI protection for devices used outside. Do not use extension cords as permanent wiring around a pool.

If someone is shocked in or near a pool

The CPSC says to immediately turn off all power, because if the power is not turned off, rescuers can also become victims. Call 911. Then have a licensed electrician inspect the system before anyone uses the pool again.
